We are a publication focused on art and creative practice within the state of Kentucky. Through publishing and programming efforts, our goal is to connect and engage the artists, ideas, and cultural infrastructures that shape our region.

Our publication is primarily interested in critical engagement with the visual arts.

Our recurring Vignettes articles serve to document sites of community. We are not currently accepting Vignette pitches at this time.

Occasionally, we expand our coverage to include creative practices such as film, music, food, or design, etc. when those practices intersect with a visual arts practice, demonstrate a strong place-centered quality, or contain significant conceptual or technical depth that invites interpretation and critique.

We are looking for writing that moves beyond simple news or summary. Our interest is in pieces that interpret, question, and engage deeply with artistic practice.

We are particularly interested in writing that:

• Offers interpretation, criticism, or reflection

• Iterates a clear voice and point of view

• Reflects the author’s distinct perspective or experience

• Balances accessibility with thoughtful critical engagement

Yes. Kudzu jelly focuses on art connected to the state of Kentucky.

This means that our articles must include some relationship to the state of Kentucky. Articles typically cover exhibitions, artists, arts events, or broader cultural conversations with roots in the region.

We do accept pitches, though most articles are commissioned directly by the editors. We often approach writers whose work, interests, or perspectives align with a particular story.

Pitches should be emailed to lindsey@kudzu-jelly.com and should:

• Be 200–300 words

• Clearly describe the subject and format of the proposed piece

• Include relevant details (artist names, exhibition titles, opening or closing dates, links, etc.)

• Offer a specific idea and point of view, rather than a general topic

• Address the writer’s relationship to the subject matter

• Demonstrate a clear connection to art within Kentucky

• Include a writing sample (if we have not published your work before)

Please do not email with completed drafts. This allows our editors to work with writers early in the process and ensure the piece fits our editorial direction.

Formats are assigned by the editors depending on the scope of the story.

Our two primary formats are:

• Short Form: ~500–800 words

• Long Form: ~1,000–1,600 words

Our current editorial formats include:

• Curatorial Reflections: Personal insights on curatorial projects

• Field Notes: Reflections on artists’ travels, residencies, and opportunities impacting their practice

• Interviews: Interviews with artists and curators on their current work or projects

• Reviews: The familiar exhibition review

• Thesis: Providing critical commentary on issues or expressing opinion

• Vignettes: Pieces highlighting local community events and painting a picture of the social milieu
